Review: ‘Darker Than The Sun’: More Than Just Locations

It’s a cliché, I know: every man wants to be James Bond and every woman the beautiful Bond girl. Yet it’s something I often think about while reading Darker Than The Sun. How wonderful would it be to explore the world as 007 or one of Bond’s love interests?

In the Austrian region of Vorarlberg lies the village of Sankt Gallenkirch. It’s the heart of the Silvretta Montafon ski area. I’ve settled here with my father for two weeks to enjoy the fresh Alpine air. During our vacation, we’re treated to everything this breathtaking region has to offer: icy cold days, half a meter of snow, exciting hikes, stunning views, and Kaiserwetter. That is something James Bond would definitely enjoy here: clear blue skies and winter sun shining over freshly fallen snow. The chalet where my father and I are staying could easily serve as a location in a Bond film.

As I read Darker Than The Sun, I easily imagine the Austrian locations from the movies. Sölden, for example, is just an hour away. Because of the weather, the locations from Spectre (2015) can’t be visited. Authors Ajay Chowdhury and Matthew Field describe the Alps as the kind of place Ian Fleming, James Bond’s creator, stayed during a difficult mental period when he was eighteen. He stayed in the ski village of Kitzbühel, nearly two hundred kilometers from Sölden, the place where Fleming learned to ski and to write.

Locations

Darker Than The Sun: An Atlas of James Bond Movie Locations covers the filming locations from the 25 ‘official’ James Bond films. It’s important to note that the authors refer only to the EON Productions films. So don’t expect information about Never Say Never Again (1983) or the two Casino Royale productions from 1954 and 1967.

It’s impressive that Ajay and Matthew managed to fit so much information about the films into such a compact, nearly square book. It’s the kind of guide you can easily slip into your bag while discovering Bond film locations.

This leads naturally to the comparison with that other Bond travel guide: On the Tracks of 007. After thirty years, that book has become an icon in the Bond community.

However, it focuses more on exploring the locations yourself rather than the stories behind them. It’s also very much the personal journey of Martijn Mulder, the man behind the book. Saying that the two books are identical would be far too easy.

Background Information

This atlas of James Bond film locations is more than just a travel guide. The authors provide detailed descriptions of each location and clearly choose to include a lot of background information. That makes the book truly unique in the niche it occupies. A few examples that stood out to me:

In the chapter on For Your Eyes Only (1981), we learn that cooperation with the monks of the Aghia Triatha monastery didn’t run smoothly. In the film, this is where the final confrontation between Kristatos and Bond takes place, as they battle over the ATAC device (used by the British to communicate with their Polaris submarines). According to producer Michael Wilson, many monks were unhappy with the film crew’s presence.

The monks believed they would receive a more generous financial contribution. As a result, they frequently protested against the crew’s presence. Producer Albert Broccoli managed to calm tensions by making a substantial donation to their charitable fund.

The finale of The World Is Not Enough (1999), set on the Bosporus in Istanbul, presented the filmmakers with different challenges. How do you prevent international maritime traffic from sailing straight through your scenes? Screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade explain in Darker Than The Sun that chains were once used—stretched between Kiz Kulesi, Maiden’s Tower, and the mainland.

Maiden’s Tower, an 11th-century lighthouse, is where Elektra imprisons Bond and M. For the production, a submarine was placed there, which successfully kept shipping at bay and created a spectacular finale. Today, the lighthouse is a restaurant.

Special Maps

An atlas wouldn’t be complete without topographic maps, and Darker Than The Sun certainly delivers. But the creators added something special: the locations are plotted partly based on cast and crew movements. This adds a dynamic layer to the book.

To incorporate fictional locations—often filmed at Pinewood Studios—into Bond’s journeys, the authors provide a complete overview. Bond’s travels, and those of other characters, are illustrated with photos and stories. Each chapter begins with a map of the full journey, followed by more detailed focus throughout the chapter.

Authors

Ajay Chowdhury and Matthew Field are well-known figures in the James Bond world. They previously co-authored Some Kind of Hero, one of the most extensive reference works on the films, full of anecdotes and stories from cast and crew.

With Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond, Volume One, you dive into the world of cars, boats, and other vehicles from the films. This stunning coffee-table book, full of photos and stories, is a real eye-catcher.

I’m certain we’ll hear more from these authors in the future—especially since more volumes of Spy Octane have already been announced. These men live and breathe James Bond, and I’m privileged to call them my friends.

A Clear Conclusion

If I had to translate the book into a star rating, there’s no way around it: five stars. No more, no less. Darker Than The Sun offers a unique perspective on the world of James Bond and gives readers plenty of ideas to immerse themselves in the world of 007.

The book is full of background information and includes many anecdotes from cast and crew. The per-film maps are a fantastic addition and, after nearly twenty years in the Bond community, they gave me a fresh perspective on the world of 007.

Recensie Darker Than The Sun: Meer dan enkel locaties

Het is een cliché ik weet het: elke man wil James Bond zijn en elke vrouw de mooie Bond-girl. Toch is het iets waar ik tijdens het lezen van Darker Than The Sun vaak aan moet denken. Hoe mooi zou het zijn om als 007 of Bond-vlam de wereld te verkennen?

In het Oostenrijkse Vorarlberg ligt het plaatsje Sankt Gallenkirch. Het is het hart van het Silvretta Montafon-skigebied. Ik ben hier samen met mijn vader voor twee weken neergestreken om van de frisse Alpenlucht te genieten. We worden geduurde die periode getrakteerd op alles wat deze adembenemende streek te bieden heeft: iJzige koude, een halve meter sneeuw, prachtige vergezichten, spannende hikes en Kaiserwetter. Dat laatste is iets waar James Bond op deze plek vast van zou genieten. Een strakblauwe hemel en de winterzon boven vers gevallen sneeuw. Het chalet waar mijn vader en ik in verblijven is er qua locatie eentje uit een James Bond-film.

Ik verplaats me tijdens het lezen van Darker Than The Sun steeds meer in de Oostenrijkse locaties uit de films. Zo ligt Sölden hier een uur vandaan. Vanwege het weer zijn de locaties uit Spectre (2015) niet te bezoeken. Auteurs Ajay Chowdhury en Matthew Field beschrijven de Alpen locaties als een plek waar Ian Fleming, geestelijk vader van James Bond, tijdens een moeilijke mentale periode rond zijn achttiende verbleef. Dan hebben we het wel over het skidorp Kitzbühel wat op bijna tweehonderd kilometer van Sölden ligt. De plek waar Fleming leerde skiën en schrijven.

Locaties

Darker Than The Sun: An Atlas of James Bond Movie Locations gaat over de filmlocaties uit de tot nu toe 25 James Bond-films. Belangrijk om te vermelden is dat de schrijvers hiermee de ‘officiële’ EON Productions-films bedoelen. Verwacht in het boek dus geen informatie over Never Say Never Again (1983) of de twee Casino Royale producties uit 1954 en 1967.

Sowieso is het al knap dat Ajay en Matthew zoveel informatie over de films in het boek kwijt kunnen. Het boek is vrij compact en haast vierkant. Je steekt het tijdens je ontdekkingsreizen langs de locaties van de Bond-films zo in je tas.

Dan komen we direct bij het vergelijk met die andere reisgids langs de Bond-films. On The Tracks of 007 is na dertig jaar niet meer weg te denken uit het Bond-landschap. Deze complete gids legt de focus alleen meer op het zelf ontdekken van de locaties en niet op de verhalen erachter.

Daarnaast is het voor het overgrote deel de reis van Martijn Mulder, de man achter het boek. Zeggen dat de boeken één op één met elkaar overeenkomen is dus veel te kort door de bocht.

Achtergrondinformatie

Deze atlas rond de James Bond-filmlocaties is niet alleen een reisgids. De auteurs hebben elke locatie niet alleen uitgebreid beschreven, maar kiezen ook duidelijk voor flink wat achtergrondinformatie. Dat maakt het boek nog unieker in de beperkte en specifieke markt waarin het opereert. Een aantal voorbeelden die mij opvielen, wil ik graag even met je bespreken.

Zo lezen we in het hoofdstuk For Your Eyes Only (1981) dat de samenwerking met de monniken van het Aghia Triatha klooster niet gladjes verliep. In de film is dit de plek waar de eindconfrontatie tussen Kristatos en James Bond plaatsvindt. Ze vechten er om de ATAC (de machine waarmee de Britten met hun Polaris onderzeeërs communiceren). Volgens Michael Wilson, producent van de films tot en met No Time to Die (2021), waren veel monniken niet blij met hun aanwezigheid.

De monniken dachten dat er een ruimere financiële vergoeding zou worden gegeven. Het resultaat was dat de monniken te pas en te onpas tegen de aanwezigheid van de filmploeg gingen demonstreren. Producent Albert Broccoli wist de gemoederen te bedaren door een ruime donatie aan hun liefdadigheidsfonds te doen.

De finale van The World Is Not Enough (1999) op de Bosporus in Istanboel stelde de makers voor andere uitdagingen. Hoe zorg je ervoor dat het internationale scheepvaartverkeer niet door je film heenvaart? Scenarioschrijvers Neal Purvis en Robert Wade vertellen in Darker Than The Sun dat er vroeger stalen kettingen werden gebruikt. Die spande men dan tussen Kiz Kulesi, Maidens Tower en het vaste land.

Maidens Tower is een elfde-eeuwse vuurtoren waar Elektra 007 en M gevangenhoudt. Voor de productie legde men er een onderzeeër neer. Die hield het scheepvaartverkeer prima op afstand en zorgde voor een spectaculaire finale in de film. De vuurtoren is tegenwoordig een restaurant.

Bijzondere kaarten

Een atlas is natuurlijk niet compleet zonder topografische kaarten. Die vind je dan ook volop in Darker Than The Sun. Alleen hebben de makers hier iets speciaals mee gedaan. Ze hebben de locaties uit de film deels op basis van cast en crew ingetekend. Dit maakt het geheel lekker dynamisch.

Om deze fictionele locaties, meestal opgenomen op de Pinewood Studios, in de reis van James Bond per film op te nemen, schetsen de makers een mooi totaalbeeld. De reis van Bond en andere personages wordt elke keer door foto’s en verhalen geduid. Zo begint elk hoofdstuk met een kaart van de reis in het geheel en ligt de focus in de rest van het hoofdstuk op meer detail.

Auteurs

Ajay Chowdhury en Matthew Field zijn geen onbekenden in de James Bond-wereld. Ze schreven al eerder samen het boek Some Kind of Hero. Dit boek is een van de meest uitgebreide naslagwerken rond de films en biedt tal van anekdotes en verhalen van cast en crew.

Met Spy Octane, The Vehicles of James Bond Volume One stap je in de wereld van auto’s, boten en andere voertuigen uit de films. Dit prachtige koffietafelboek met veel foto’s en verhalen is een echte eyecatcher.

Ik weet zeker dat we in de toekomst meer van de twee auteurs gaan horen. Al was het maar omdat er meerdere delen van Spy Octane, The Vehicles of James Bond zijn aangekondigd. Deze heren ademen James Bond en ik ben bevoorrecht om ze mijn vrienden te mogen noemen.

Een heldere conclusie

Als ik het boek in sterren moet vatten kan ik er niet omheen: Vijf sterren. Niet meer niet minder. Darker Than The Sun is een unieke kijk op de wereld van James Bond en geeft de lezer tal van ideeën om zich te verplaatsen in de wereld van 007.

Het boek staat bol van achtergrondinformatie en biedt vele anekdotes van cast en crew. De kaarten naar film vind ik een fantastische toevoeging en ze gaven mij na bijna twintig jaar in de James Bond-community een bijzonder gevoel.
