Het is alweer drie jaar geleden dat For Your Eyes Only in de Folio-reeks uitkwam. Liefhebbers moesten dus even geduld hebben, want eigenlijk stond dit laatste deel voor vorig jaar gepland. Met de publicatie van Octopussy & The Living Daylights maakt Folio Society de reeks nu eindelijk compleet, zo blijkt uit een tweet van Calvin Dyson.

Octopussy & The Living Daylights is het veertiende en laatste James Bond-boek van Ian Fleming. Het boek bevatte aanvankelijk twee verhalen, Octopussy en The Living Daylights, maar latere edities werden uitgebreid met de korte verhalen The Property of a Lady en 007 in New York.

Zoals vaker putte Fleming rijkelijk uit zijn eigen leven. Zijn passie voor Jamaica, zijn oorlogservaringen en zijn liefde voor bergsport en duiken komen duidelijk terug in de verhalen. Ook persoonlijke connecties, van vrienden tot minnaressen, verwerk­te hij tot karakters of details. Zelfs een recept voor roerei vond zijn weg naar de pagina’s.

Octopussy

In dit verhaal reist Bond naar Jamaica om Major Dexter Smythe te confronteren. Smythe wordt verdacht van de moord op Bonds voormalige skiler­aar Hannes Oberhauser én de diefstal van nazi-goud. Hoewel Bond slechts een bijrol speelt, is zijn aanwezigheid cruciaal. Hij biedt Smythe de keuze: zich verantwoorden of zelfmoord plegen. Uiteindelijk vindt Smythe de dood op bizarre wijze – verstrikt tussen een giftige schorpioenvis en zijn huisdier-octopus, toepasselijk Octopussy genoemd.

Veel elementen van het verhaal stammen rechtstreeks uit Flemings leven. Hij had in Kitzbühel gewandeld en geskied, observeerde octopussen bij zijn huis in Jamaica en had een langlopende fascinatie voor verborgen nazi-goud. Zijn buurvrouw en latere minnares Blanche Blackwell gaf hem een kleine roeiboot, die hij Octopussy noemde. Zo kreeg het verhaal zijn opmerkelijke titel.

The Living Daylights

Bond krijgt de opdracht een Britse agent veilig uit Oost-Berlijn te loodsen. Zijn taak: een KGB-sluipschutter uitschakelen, codenaam Trigger. Vanuit een hotelkamer houdt Bond het niemandsland in de gaten, maar tot zijn verbazing blijkt Trigger niemand minder dan een jonge celliste te zijn. Op het beslissende moment schiet Bond niet haar dood, maar haar wapen kapot. Een zeldzaam moment van compassie van de geharde 007.

Het verhaal was deels geïnspireerd door een echte ontsnapping uit Colditz, waarbij een orkestgeluid de vluchtende gevangenen dekmantel bood. Trigger is gebaseerd op Flemings halfzus Amaryllis, een concertcelliste en andere personages zijn geïnspireerd op Bond-bekenden uit de oorlog en MI6, zoals Sir Stewart Menzies.

The Property of a Lady

Wanneer MI6 ontdekt dat een dubbelagente een Fabergé-ei wil veilen bij Sotheby’s, vermoedt Bond dat dit een list is om haar uit te betalen. Hij woont de veiling bij, observeert de KGB-contactpersoon en legt zo een spionnen­spel bloot waarin kunst en geopolitiek elkaar raken.

The Property of a Lady was een opdracht voor Sotheby’s en werd in 1963 gepubliceerd in hun jaarlijkse Ivory Hammer.

007 in New York

Het kortste verhaal uit de bundel is vooral een luchtige schets. Bond reist af naar New York om een voormalige MI6-medewerkster te waarschuwen voor haar nieuwe geliefde, een KGB-agent. Tussendoor reflecteert hij op de stad en deelt Fleming zelfs zijn favoriete recept voor roerei. Uiteraard geserveerd met wat roséchampagne van Taittinger.

Breek de eieren in een kom. Klop ze grondig los met een vork en breng goed op smaak. Smelt vier ons boter in een kleine koperen pan (of een pan met dikke bodem). Zodra de boter gesmolten is, giet je de eieren erbij en laat je ze op zeer laag vuur garen, terwijl je voortdurend klopt met een kleine garde. Wanneer de eieren nog iets minder gegaard zijn dan je normaal zou wensen om te eten, haal je de pan van het vuur, voeg je de resterende boter toe en blijf je nog een halve minuut kloppen. Voeg ondertussen fijngehakte bieslook of fijne kruiden toe. Serveer op warme, met boter besmeerde toast in individuele koperen schaaltjes (puur voor de uitstraling), met roséchampagne (Taittinger) en zachte achtergrondmuziek.

Van boek naar film

EON Productions liet zich meerdere keren inspireren door deze bundel. In 1983 verscheen Octopussy, waarin elementen van zowel Octopussy als The Property of a Lady zijn verwerkt. Vier jaar later werd The Living Daylights vrij getrouw verfilmd met Timothy Dalton in zijn debuut als 007.

Ook latere films bevatten knipoogjes naar deze verhalen, zoals Solange in Casino Royale (2006) en een plotdetail in Quantum of Solace (2008); in de laatste scène van de film waarschuwt Bond een Canadese agente wanneer zij een relatie blijkt te hebben met de ex-vriend van Vesper Lynd. Zelfs de naam Oberhauser vond zijn weg naar Spectre (2015), waarin wordt verteld dat hij de vader is van 007’s aartsvijand, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

The Folio Society en Fay Dalton

The Folio Society is in 1947 opgericht in Londen. Ze hebben als missie om literaire grootheden te eren door speciale edities op de markt te brengen. Ze onderscheidt zich door het gebruik van lettertypen, illustraties, papier en de manier van binden. De eerder verschenen edities van The Folio Society werden met veel lof ontvangen.

De illustraties zijn naar verwachting wederom van de in Londen wonende Fay Dalton. Haar stijl kenmerkt zich vooral door de vintage look en past goed bij de jaren 50-periode. In 2010 won ze de Pickled Ink Award fo Illustration, een belangrijke prijs voor kunstenaars. Kenmerkend voor het werk van Dalton is de combinatie tussen traditioneel teken- en schildermethodes en digitaal tekenen.

Het bericht Folio Society kondigt Octopussy & The Living Daylights aan verscheen eerst op James Bond Nederland.

He was chosen, with a bit of luck on his side, for the role of the mysterious assassin with a Walkman around his neck. I interviewed him on the occasion of our then customary film months.

JamesBondNL: I just returned from another spy film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and it features a hilarious set of cameo’s from Sir Elton John. You actually made your debut as a cameo in perhaps one of Elton’s most famous videoclips, Nikita. How did that happen?
Andreas Wisniewski: “A distinguished looking man at a West End party started talking to me and a few minutes later he offered me a part in “a music video”. The man turned out to be the great Ken Russell [regisseur “Women In Love”, 1969] and the videoclip for Elton John’s “Nikita”.”

JamesBondNL: The song is actually about a female border control guard stationed in East-Berlin. You were actually born in Berlin. Do you recall something of the Cold War tensions between East- and West-Berlin?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Sure I do. I used to live in Spandau near a military practise ground. I recall the sound of bombs exploding in the middle of the night. That was quite scary, until we became aware that it was an exercise. The everyday practicalities between East and West in Berlin were banal, though. Humans dealing with humans. The Cold War was clearly made by politicians, not the people.”

JamesBondNL: It was in Germany where you started your career as a classical dancer in the Bayerische Staatsoper, yet you didn’t further pursue a life as a ballet dancer. Could you elaborate on that?
Andreas Wisniewski: “At 25 I was already too old, too decrepit, and fed up. I am kidding haha. Well, a bit. Mainly, though, by that time I had my first experiences of acting on stage as well as in a (student) film. There was no turning back, I had tasted the ‘blood’ of acting.”

JamesBondNL: So British director Ken Russell basically discovered you. Then you went to London to appear in his horror film Gothic. How was that experience for you, including moving all the way from Germany to London?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I moved to the United States first. But I went broke quite quickly. So I returned to London where I had studied ballet. It was easy. I owned two suitcases full of stuff. I packed them. And left.”

JamesBondNL: The late Sir Roger Moore once said “During my early acting years I was told that to succeed you needed personality, talent and luck in equal measure…….I contest that. For me it’s been 99% luck”. Isn’t that a bit of a sad fact of working in film? Knowing that so many potential actors in the end are not able to get that big dream job?
Andreas Wisniewski: “One can see it that way. But in Zen there is a saying “Better to wear shoes than cover the whole Earth in leather”. In other words oughtn’t I to find a way for myself to deal with it since ‘changing the industry” does not seem a viable option?”

JamesBondNL: So regarding that ‘luck’ then, how did you eventually got the part of Necros in The Living Daylights? Where there more contenders for that role?
Andreas Wisniewski: “That was 100% luck yes. The character description of Necros was a description of me.”

“In Zen there is a saying: “Better to wear shoes than cover the whole Earth in leather”. In other words….oughtn’t I find a way for myself to deal with it since “changing the industry” does not seem a viable option?”

JamesBondNL: How did the introduction happened between you and the rest of the cast from The Living Daylights? More specifically, how was your relationship on set with Dutch actor Jeroen Krabbé?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I remember having a few good conversations with Jeroen. He was painting while we were in Morocco, and we sat in his trailer and chatted.”

JamesBondNL: And while on set, did your work as a ballet dancer gave you a head start during fight rehearsals with stuntman Bill Weston?
Andreas Wisniewski: “On some level, yes. What ballet does well is developing the kinesthetic senses, and so the increased awareness of one’s body is a good platform upon which one can mimick all kinds of things. But there are also mannerisms that dancers tend to have that look unnatural and that one needs to get rid of as best as possible.”

JamesBondNL: Earlier we were talking about political tensions between East- and West Berlin during the Cold War. Today cyber terrorism seems to do a lot of damage to the world (think about Skyfall). Do you think the James Bond films, since The Living Daylights, have changed a bit from a geopolitical perspective?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Yes and no. There is still always the Bondian Ubervillain. And who would want to lose him?”

JamesBondNL: Did you and your family (your kids) see any of the more recent Bond films? And what do you think of them in comparison to The Living Daylights?
Andreas Wisniewski: “We all like the more realistic angle that the 007 movies tend to take us nowadays. Daniel Craig is also my favourite Bond. That works better for me……if I can believe that the man is homicidal….”

JamesBondNL: Was your role in a Bond film helpful for your next feature film?
Andreas Wisniewski: “To be honest? No.”

JamesBondNL: Do you think there’s a difference between working on a British/European production and an American production after you worked on Die Hard?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Both of these were super-professional productions. In addition to that the Bond set was incredibly relaxed.”

JamesBondNL: You actually continued working on spy/action franchises, like the Mission: Impossible-franchise. But doesn’t it make you afraid of being typecasted as a bad guy? Or should certain actors be happy for the fact that typecasting brings in jobs?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Afraid of being typecasted at my age? I’d be quite happy to play another twenty villains. If those were offered…. Worrying about that sort of stuff is for young people.”

JamesBondNL: Regarding Mission: Impossible 1 and Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol, how did you get the roles? And did you actually play the same character in both of them?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Yes, the same character was the idea. By the time we shot Mission IV I had practically no hair. They gave me the wig to identify the character. For Mission IV I was contacted on Facebook! Three days later I was in Dubai.”

JamesBondNL: In the first Mission: Impossible film you are Vanessa Redgrave’s sidekick. How was it working with a British Oscar-winning actress like Vaness Redgrave?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Vanessa was great. I didn’t have many scenes with her, mainly because I didn’t have many scenes. But we talked on the set. About social issues if I remember correctly. I have also worked with Joely and Natasha, Vanessa’s daughters, and once had breakfast with her ex-husband Tony Richardson. Kind of a curious tidbit that I know four of the dynasty.”

“Afraid at being typecasted at my age? I’d be quite happy to play another twenty villains. If those were offered…. Worrying about that sort of stuff is for young people.”

JamesBondNL: And how does that compare to working with the actual leading actor, Tom Cruise?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Well, let me comment on Mission IV. I had half a day of shooting on the film. One scene with Tom to be precise. He remembered me. It had been his idea to bring me in to tie the movie to the earlier one. He was very nice to me. We talked about kids and sports and moviemaking.”

JamesBondNL: Both Timothy Dalton and Tom Cruise played a recurring character in a popular spy franchise. Do you see a difference between the two actors on how they approach their roles? And if we bring current actor Daniel Craig into this comparison?
Andreas Wisniewski: “It seems that way to me but if you really want to know you have to ask them…”

JamesBondNL: After working on a lot of films, you have accumulated a pretty extensive filmography. Are you still in touch with some of the actors you worked with?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Not many at all. After a film shoot the “family” ‘ explodes’, and you tend to run into each other on some other projects down the line.”

JamesBondNL: The Broccoli-family is known for treating its cast and crew as a giant family. If that is the case, and if you are still in touch with some actors, have you ever tried to organize a reunion? And would some actors be open for it?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I am not really in touch with them. Would they be open to a reunion? Don’t they do this all the time?”

JamesBondNL: Haha, I should perhaps ask them in detail Andreas. On to your acting, which is your main profession off course. Did it also become a facilitator for writing screenplays. Could you tell us something about that?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I have shelved dramatic writing. For now. I will dig it up again if and when I will have finished my current projects: a Zen movie and a documentary about a musician (he says hopefully).”

JamesBondNL: What advice would you give Bond fans if they have a great story idea for a Bond film and would like to pitch it?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Be realistic!”

“Vanessa [Redgrave] was great. I didn’t have many scenes with her, mainly because I didn’t have many scenes. But we talked on the set. About social issues if I remember correctly.”

JamesBondNL: Something very different from your acting work is your affiliation with Zen Buddhism. How did that exactly happen?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I had……a personal tragedy and I needed answers.”

JamesBondNL: Is Zen Buddhism a way for you to temporarily disconnect from the cinematic world? Or would you prefer to focus on Zen Buddhism fulltime by giving up on acting and other aspects of filmmaking?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Zen to me is a way to ENGAGE rather than to disconnect. Although I don’t live in a monastery, I am ordained, and to me that means that my whole life is Zen practise, wherever I am. So I can be an actor or a director and there isn’t even the slightest friction with Zen.”

JamesBondNL: Throughout several decades in your life you have been travelling the world quite a lot. What complications does that bring for you? And from a family perspective?
Andreas Wisniewski: “It’s been fine for my family. I have been sharing raising my gang (of three boys) with my ex-partner, so I have been free to be away half the time. As for personal relationships it’s a bit trickier. I am now an expert on long-distance relationships.”

JamesBondNL: Is there a possibility for some editors within the JBNL-team to get a Zen Buddhism clinic? What would you advise us if we like to get into Zen Buddhism?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Best idea I have heard in a while. Get in touch with ZenRiver in Uithuizen. This is ‘my’ monastery. There is a great Zen master there, Tenkei Roshi, and some unbelievably helpful people. Do it! You won’t regret it.”

JamesBondNL: One last question Andreas. What is your ultimate favorite film that we should watch to get new creative inspiration, for either writing or any other aspect of filmmaking?
Andreas Wisniewski: “My all-time favourite is 2001: A Space Odyssey. Visionary. Beautiful. Mysterious. Ahead of its time.”

Het bericht A Talk with the Walkman strangler: Andreas Wisniewski verscheen eerst op James Bond Nederland.

Of hij er al aan had gedacht om Jeroen Krabbé te vragen. Aardige man maar nee, niet aandacht. Bovendien, gaat Martin Koolhoven verder: “We rijden wel terug, we rijden alleen niet heen. We zijn daar al in de buurt.” Geen probleem, geef ik aan, ik wil hem best ophalen. “Meen je dat?” In dat geval: “Check eerst of hij überhaupt wel kan.”

De laatste maanden heb ik regelmatig contact met Martin Koolhoven. De regisseur gaat vanaf september de Nederlandse bioscopen langs met James Bond-colleges. En als dat net zo leuk wordt als het voorproefje dat hij in april gaf met Goldfinger (1964), wordt dat smullen. Een uur, anderhalf uur lullen over Bond, in interactie met het publiek en na een korte pauze de hoofdfilm: een Bond-klassieker. Waarna je Koolhoven na afloop ook nog aan de bioscoopbar kunt treffen om verder te kletsen. Want hij blijft er de hele voorstelling bijzitten om zo nu en dan door de film heen te roepen.

Op deze manier brengt het programma Koolhovens Keuze elf Bond-films eenmalig terug in de bioscoop. Bond blijft toch een cinema-ervaring, hoe vaak je de film thuis al hebt gezien. De mogelijkheid om je favoriete Bond-films op het witte doek te aanschouwen, is een must voor de liefhebber.

Onlangs vertoonde Koolhoven de film Karakter (1997) in bijzijn van hoofdrolspeler Fedja van Huêt; in september is filmproducent Dave Schram aanwezig bij het Vlaamse epos Daens. Zodoende dacht ik: dan mag Jeroen Krabbé niet ontbreken als Martin Koolhoven The Living Daylights (1987) vertoont.

Jeroen Krabbé is mijn held. Dat was hij al voordat ik hem in 2012 ontmoette. Iedereen die aan een James Bond-film heeft meegewerkt is een held, maar als Nederlander net iets meer. Het is niet veel Nederlanders gegeven in een Bond-film op te treden. We tellen er in totaal vier met een rol, twee daarvan een significante, en één daarvan als belangrijkste tegenstander, die dus samen met de Bond-acteur en diens verovering de pers te woord mag staan. Joe Don Baker was op die persbijeenkomsten nergens te bekennen (dit voor degenen die Brad Whitaker als hoofdboef van de film denken te zien).

In 2012 werkte ik als regisseur en redacteur aan een aantal radioprogramma’s van de NTR. Dat jaar markeerde 50 jaar James Bond en 25 jaar The Living Daylights, dus ja, ik moest maar eens een belletje naar Amsterdam plegen. Een belletje waar ik best tegenop zag, omdat ik zomaar oor aan oor met mijn held kon komen te staan.

Omdat ik vreesde te gaan hakkelen aan de telefoon, leek dit mij de beste oplossing: enkele dagen in de vooravond moest ik voor een ander programma in de AKN-studio zijn. Vanaf het NTR-paviljoen op het mediapark, met de auto het kippeneindje naar de AKN (omdat ik daarna altijd meteen naar huis ging), de parkeergarage in, trap op langs de receptie en gelijk door naar de redactieruimte waar ik de juiste muzieknummers en bumpers in het Avid-systeem moest slepen. Ik kwam daar toch altijd enigszins gehaast aan. Mooi. Dat leek mij de beste dekmantel om gelijk even te bellen.

En zo belde ik al hijgend naar het vaste nummer in Amsterdam en na een aantal keren overgaan werd de telefoon opgenomen. Geen naam, alleen een vriendelijk “Hallo”. Dat was hem. General Koskov in hoogst eigen persoon, zomaar op een dinsdagavond. Of ik hem even mocht storen. Dat mocht.

Na een kort gesprek had ik het e-mailadres van mijn held ontfutseld. “Waar slaat dat op?”, vroeg ik oprecht toen ik het noteerde. “Dat leg ik nog wel een keer uit”, was zijn respons. Ik zou hem een aantal beschikbare data toesturen en hij zou kijken of daar een geschikte tussen zat. Het hele gesprek had niet veel langer dan een paar minuten geduurd, maar ik had beet, ik had gewoon met mijn held gesproken! Ik glom van trots.

Mijn uitnodiging per e-mail volgde de dag erna. Daar moest ik echt even voor gaan zitten, ik moest immers tactisch te werk gaan. Natuurlijk mocht, nee móest hij weten van mijn jarenlange Bond-liefde en van mijn BondBlog. De mail moest ook zakelijk zijn, want hij moest weten niet met een geobsedeerde fan te maken te hebben. Van mij hoefde hij niets anders te vrezen dan waardering.

En toen. Toen hoorde ik niets…

Zo stom, ik had natuurlijk een verkeerd e-mailadres genoteerd. Het klonk al zo vreemd. Dan moest ik hem na het weekend nogmaals schoorvoetend opbellen dat ik het fout had opgeschreven. Wat was ik toch een amateur.

Op zondagavond checkte ik nogmaals mijn werkmail. Ik durfde bijna niet te hopen. Stond daar toch zijn naam! Een alleraardigste reactie met een datum waarop hij kon komen. Hij zou mijn website eens bekijken.

Op de dag van de opname stierf ik van de zenuwen. Zo dadelijk zou ik mijn held ontmoeten. Je weet wat ze zeggen over het ontmoeten van helden: niet doen! Een telefoontje van de receptie: onze gast zat te wachten. Ik naar het Net 3-gebouw om hem op te halen.

Daar zat hij rustig op een bankje. Colbertje aan, wit overhemd. Een grote leren tas naast zich. De tas met plakboeken, daar had ik om gevraagd. Een glimlach, een stevige handdruk. Wat voor mij blijkbaar heel belangrijk was, is of hem mocht tutoyeren. Het was het eerste wat ik hem vroeg. Geen probleem!

Jeroen en ik liepen over het dak naar het paviljoen, waar we staande werden gehouden door Lex Uiting. Hij had een vraag over seks. Mijn held gaf mij vleugels; ik reageerde opmerkelijk ad rem, daar had de Limburger niet van terug. Ik probeerde te lopen zoals ik met iedere bekende Nederlander naar het paviljoen liep. Maar al die anderen, al waren zij Hans van Breukelen, Jan Zwartkruis, IJf Blokker, Penney de Jager, Jan Terlouw, Sjaak Swart of Reinier Paping, zij waren geen van allen Jeroen Krabbé.

Voor de opnamen verlekkerde ik mij aan zijn plakboeken. Zes stuks vol met unieke foto’s van de Bond-set. Jeroen zag mijn enthousiasme. Als hij er niet meer zou zijn, zouden de plakboeken mijn kant op gaan. Maar blijf alsjeblieft nog heel lang bij ons, ik heb je pas één keer ontmoet!

Het radiogesprek waarvoor hij was gekomen, liep als een zonnetje. Jeroen was welbespraakt, voelde zich zichtbaar op zijn gemak. Na de opname een fotosessie, een handtekening en de grootste troef: hij mocht beschermheer van mijn Bond Blog worden. Nou, dat wilde hij wel. Dat was hem nog nooit aangeboden!

Na een warm afscheid zie ik hem nog zwaaien vanaf de achterbank van de taxi. Wat een avontuur. Ik was in de wolken. Maar toen moest het mooiste nog komen. Nog geen uur later: pling! Een mailtje. Of Jeroen mijn thuisadres mocht hebben, hij had iets voor me. Ik had hem desnoods mijn pincode toevertrouwd!

De volgende dag: een dreun op de deurmat. Een vuistdikke enveloppe. In mijn handen hield ik het officiële script dat Jeroen Krabbé had gebruikt op de set van The Living Daylights… On-ge-loof-lijk. Een relikwie. 25 jaar lang had het boekwerk dode huidcellen verzameld in het huis van mijn held, en nu, zomaar, was het in mijn bezit. Mijn heilige graal! Er zat een briefje bij:

Beste Jasper, dit is voor jou omdat je zo’n Bond-allesweter bent! Ik ontdekte nu dat er op het titelblad staat: ‘this screenplay must be returned to the production office at the end of your involvement with the film’! Nooit geweten… Dus wees er maar zuinig op! Dag, Jeroen

Sinds die tijd hebben we regelmatig contact, zwaaien we naar elkaar in het Vondelpark, houden we logeerpartijen, vieren we vakanties in Zuid-Frankrijk en krijg ik fanmail van hem als hij mij ergens heeft horen praten: “Wat leuk om je te horen op de radio met je ‘Heilige Graal’! Het is bij jou in goede handen!”

Met die man zou ik graag twee uur heen en terug in de auto naar Steenwijk zitten om hem bij Martin Koolhoven af te leveren. Wat een show moet dat worden. Een echte Hollywoodster in Overijssel! Alleen maar bewonderaars. Leuk uitje ook voor een acteur van bijna tachtig. Wat doe je anders op een zaterdagavond in september? Maar dan moet je net Jeroen Krabbé als held hebben… Hij heeft het te druk! “Mijn beste Jasper, een Bond-tournee! Goed idee, maar helaas kan ik niet (ben zó druk bezig met m’n nieuwe schilder-programma!) Maar neem vooral het script mee, ze zullen jaloers op je zijn!”

Het was het proberen waard en wie weet, als het straks september is, en die zaterdagavond nadert, dat hij toch zin heeft in een ritje naar Steenwijk. Ik zal, net als James Bond met zijn Walther, mijn autosleutel onder het kussen in de aanslag houden. Klaar om de motor te starten.

Maar waar dat e-mailadres van Jeroen Krabbé op slaat? Ik heb nog steeds geen flauw idee…

Maar we hebben nog een interview te goed, waarmee we de The Living Daylights special écht kunnen afsluiten. En dat is een interview met niet zomaar een acteur. In de film speelde hij de rechterhand van Generaal Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbé). De grote, blonde, afgetrainde KGB-agent, Necros. Gert Waterink sprak met de Duitse acteur die Necros speelde; Andreas Wisniewski. In een ongedwongen setting kwam z’n hele loopbaan aan bod, van zijn eerste werkzaamheden als danser tot aan zijn huidige, meer serieuze bezigheden als Zen-Boeddhist.

JamesBondNL: I just returned from another spy film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and it features a hilarious set of cameo’s from Sir Elton John. You actually made your debut as a cameo in perhaps one of Elton’s most famous videoclips, Nikita. How did that happen?
Andreas Wisniewski: “A distinguished looking man at a West End party started talking to me and a few minutes later he offered me a part in “a music video”. The man turned out to be the great Ken Russell [regisseur “Women In Love”, 1969] and the videoclip for Elton John’s “Nikita”.”

JamesBondNL: The song is actually about a female border control guard stationed in East-Berlin. You were actually born in Berlin. Do you recall something of the Cold War tensions between East- and West-Berlin?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Sure I do. I used to live in Spandau near a military practise ground. I recall the sound of bombs exploding in the middle of the night. That was quite scary, until we became aware that it was an exercise. The everyday practicalities between East and West in Berlin were banal, though. Humans dealing with humans. The Cold War was clearly made by politicians, not the people.”

JamesBondNL: It was in Germany where you started your career as a classical dancer in the Bayerische Staatsoper, yet you didn’t further pursue a life as a ballet dancer. Could you elaborate on that?
Andreas Wisniewski: “At 25 I was already too old, too decrepit, and fed up. I am kidding haha. Well, a bit. Mainly, though, by that time I had my first experiences of acting on stage as well as in a (student) film. There was no turning back, I had tasted the ‘blood’ of acting.”

JamesBondNL: So British director Ken Russell basically discovered you. Then you went to London to appear in his horror film Gothic. How was that experience for you, including moving all the way from Germany to London?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I moved to the United States first. But I went broke quite quickly. So I returned to London where I had studied ballet. It was easy. I owned two suitcases full of stuff. I packed them. And left.”

JamesBondNL: The late Sir Roger Moore once said “During my early acting years I was told that to succeed you needed personality, talent and luck in equal measure…….I contest that. For me it’s been 99% luck”. Isn’t that a bit of a sad fact of working in film? Knowing that so many potential actors in the end are not able to get that big dream job?
Andreas Wisniewski: “One can see it that way. But in Zen there is a saying “Better to wear shoes than cover the whole Earth in leather”. In other words oughtn’t I to find a way for myself to deal with it since ‘changing the industry” does not seem a viable option?”

JamesBondNL: So regarding that ‘luck’ then, how did you eventually got the part of Necros in The Living Daylights? Where there more contenders for that role?
Andreas Wisniewski: “That was 100% luck yes. The character description of Necros was a description of me.”

“In Zen there is a saying: “Better to wear shoes than cover the whole Earth in leather”. In other words….oughtn’t I find a way for myself to deal with it since “changing the industry” does not seem a viable option?”

JamesBondNL: How did the introduction happened between you and the rest of the cast from The Living Daylights? More specifically, how was your relationship on set with Dutch actor Jeroen Krabbé?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I remember having a few good conversations with Jeroen. He was painting while we were in Morocco, and we sat in his trailer and chatted.”

JamesBondNL: And while on set, did your work as a ballet dancer gave you a head start during fight rehearsals with stuntman Bill Weston?
Andreas Wisniewski: “On some level, yes. What ballet does well is developing the kinesthetic senses, and so the increased awareness of one’s body is a good platform upon which one can mimick all kinds of things. But there are also mannerisms that dancers tend to have that look unnatural and that one needs to get rid of as best as possible.”

JamesBondNL: Earlier we were talking about political tensions between East- and West Berlin during the Cold War. Today cyber terrorism seems to do a lot of damage to the world (think about Skyfall). Do you think the James Bond films, since The Living Daylights, have changed a bit from a geopolitical perspective?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Yes and no. There is still always the Bondian Ubervillain. And who would want to lose him?”

JamesBondNL: Did you and your family (your kids) see any of the more recent Bond films? And what do you think of them in comparison to The Living Daylights?
Andreas Wisniewski: “We all like the more realistic angle that the 007 movies tend to take us nowadays. Daniel Craig is also my favourite Bond. That works better for me……if I can believe that the man is homicidal….”

JamesBondNL: Was your role in a Bond film helpful for your next feature film?
Andreas Wisniewski: “To be honest? No.”

JamesBondNL: Do you think there’s a difference between working on a British/European production and an American production after you worked on Die Hard?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Both of these were super-professional productions. In addition to that the Bond set was incredibly relaxed.”

JamesBondNL: You actually continued working on spy/action franchises, like the Mission: Impossible-franchise. But doesn’t it make you afraid of being typecasted as a bad guy? Or should certain actors be happy for the fact that typecasting brings in jobs?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Afraid of being typecasted at my age? I’d be quite happy to play another twenty villains. If those were offered…. Worrying about that sort of stuff is for young people.”

JamesBondNL: Regarding Mission: Impossible 1 and Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol, how did you get the roles? And did you actually play the same character in both of them?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Yes, the same character was the idea. By the time we shot Mission IV I had practically no hair. They gave me the wig to identify the character. For Mission IV I was contacted on Facebook! Three days later I was in Dubai.”

JamesBondNL: In the first Mission: Impossible film you are Vanessa Redgrave’s sidekick. How was it working with a British Oscar-winning actress like Vaness Redgrave?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Vanessa was great. I didn’t have many scenes with her, mainly because I didn’t have many scenes. But we talked on the set. About social issues if I remember correctly. I have also worked with Joely and Natasha, Vanessa’s daughters, and once had breakfast with her ex-husband Tony Richardson. Kind of a curious tidbit that I know four of the dynasty.”

JamesBondNL: And how does that compare to working with the actual leading actor, Tom Cruise?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Well, let me comment on Mission IV. I had half a day of shooting on the film. One scene with Tom to be precise. He remembered me. It had been his idea to bring me in to tie the movie to the earlier one. He was very nice to me. We talked about kids and sports and moviemaking.”

JamesBondNL: Both Timothy Dalton and Tom Cruise played a recurring character in a popular spy franchise. Do you see a difference between the two actors on how they approach their roles? And if we bring current actor Daniel Craig into this comparison?
Andreas Wisniewski: “It seems that way to me but if you really want to know you have to ask them…”

JamesBondNL: After working on a lot of films, you have accumulated a pretty extensive filmography. Are you still in touch with some of the actors you worked with?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Not many at all. After a film shoot the “family” ‘ explodes’, and you tend to run into each other on some other projects down the line.”

JamesBondNL: The Broccoli-family is known for treating its cast and crew as a giant family. If that is the case, and if you are still in touch with some actors, have you ever tried to organize a reunion? And would some actors be open for it?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I am not really in touch with them. Would they be open to a reunion? Don’t they do this all the time?”

JamesBondNL: Haha, I should perhaps ask them in detail Andreas. On to your acting, which is your main profession off course. Did it also become a facilitator for writing screenplays. Could you tell us something about that?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I have shelved dramatic writing. For now. I will dig it up again if and when I will have finished my current projects: a Zen movie and a documentary about a musician (he says hopefully).”

JamesBondNL: What advice would you give Bond fans if they have a great story idea for a Bond film and would like to pitch it?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Be realistic!”

JamesBondNL: Something very different from your acting work is your affiliation with Zen Buddhism. How did that exactly happen?
Andreas Wisniewski: “I had……a personal tragedy and I needed answers.”

JamesBondNL: Is Zen Buddhism a way for you to temporarily disconnect from the cinematic world? Or would you prefer to focus on Zen Buddhism fulltime by giving up on acting and other aspects of filmmaking?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Zen to me is a way to ENGAGE rather than to disconnect. Although I don’t live in a monastery, I am ordained, and to me that means that my whole life is Zen practise, wherever I am. So I can be an actor or a director and there isn’t even the slightest friction with Zen.”

JamesBondNL: Throughout several decades in your life you have been travelling the world quite a lot. What complications does that bring for you? And from a family perspective?
Andreas Wisniewski: “It’s been fine for my family. I have been sharing raising my gang (of three boys) with my ex-partner, so I have been free to be away half the time. As for personal relationships it’s a bit trickier. I am now an expert on long-distance relationships.”

JamesBondNL: Is there a possibility for some editors within the JBNL-team to get a Zen Buddhism clinic? What would you advise us if we like to get into Zen Buddhism?
Andreas Wisniewski: “Best idea I have heard in a while. Get in touch with ZenRiver in Uithuizen. This is ‘my’ monastery. There is a great Zen master there, Tenkei Roshi, and some unbelievably helpful people. Do it! You won’t regret it.”

JamesBondNL: One last question Andreas. What is your ultimate favorite film that we should watch to get new creative inspiration, for either writing or any other aspect of filmmaking?
Andreas Wisniewski: “My all-time favourite is 2001: A Space Odyssey. Visionary. Beautiful. Mysterious. Ahead of its time.”

Wat direct opvalt als je kijkt naar de verslaglegging van The Living Daylights door de Nederlandse pers, is de enorme aandacht voor de casting van Jeroen Krabbé. Logisch want Krabbé was destijds, samen met tijdsgenoten Rutger Hauer en Paul Verhoeven hot property in de internationale filmwereld. Waar ten tijde van GoldenEye Nederland gelijktijdig met de rest van de wereld kennis maakte met Famke Janssen, was Krabbé in zijn geboorteland reeds een gevierd acteur voordat hij internationale faam verwierf. Het was bovendien ook de eerste keer dat een Nederlander gecast werd voor een grote rol in een Bond film. Iets om trots op te zijn!

In Het Vrije Volk (het hedendaagse Algemeen Dagblad) van 9 juli 1987 staat naast een recensie van The Living Daylights dan ook een interview met Krabbé. Het plezier dat de Nederlander heeft beleefd tijdens zijn 007-avontuur spat er vanaf. “Verder heb ik me tijdens de opnamen fantastisch geamuseerd. Bij de stunts kwam ik niet te pas dus had ik nogal wat vrije tijd. Ik heb veel gelezen en geschilderd en af en toe gekookt. Met Maryam d’Abo heb ik in Marokko zelfs gefietst in de woestijn en in Wenen hebben we musea bezocht.”

Daarnaast spreekt Krabbé zijn enthousiasme uit over de wereldpremière in Londen. “Ik had de tijd van mijn leven, absoluut. Alleen al die galavoorstelling in Londen: zeven open doeken, waarvan één ingezet door Lady Di. Ik kon het zelf zien want ze zat vlak voor me. Ik kon me verbeelden tijdelijk tot de Groten der Aarde te worden gerekend: een Daimler met chauffeur, bloemen en champagne op m’n hotelkamer, noem maar op.”

Maar wat vond men destijds van de film? In diezelfde editie van Het Vrije Volk noemt journalist Peter Slavenburg The Living Daylights de beste Bond film aller tijden. “The Living Daylights is hard, snel en spectaculair, zonder de ongeloofwaardige onzin van de Bond-produkties van de laatste jaren.” Dit komt volgens Slavenburg met name door Dalton. “Wat vooral opvalt is dat Dalton aanzienlijk harder is dan zijn laatste voorganger: directer, beslister en grimmiger.”

Naast het sterke spel van de nieuwe 007 roemt Slavenburg het realisme van The Living Daylights. “Het aardige van de film is naar mijn idee, dat het bijna een reflectie van de werkelijkheid is.”

De nieuwe koers die de Bond producenten zijn ingeslagen, lijkt ook De Telegraaf te bekoren. Naast het spel van Dalton en de heroïsche actie roemt journalist Henk ten Berge ook de romantiek in The Living Daylights. Dankzij “klassieke acteur” Dalton die “fysiek indruk maakt maar ook zijn menselijke zwakheden kent” heeft “de romantiek in de wereld van James Bond een belangrijke plaats gekregen”.

Hans Beerekamp van Het NRC Dagblad schrijft op 9 juli 1987: “Het scenario is spannend, consistent en tot op zekere hoogte geloofwaardig. Daardoor bereikt The Living Daylights nagenoeg het niveau van Dr. No en From Russia with Love, nog steeds de beste Bond films.” Maar waar De Telegraaf de romantiek van de film roemt, is Beerekamp hierover minder enthousiast. Hij begrijpt dat de producenten gezien de maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen (Aids beheerste de krantenkoppen op dat moment) ervoor kiezen Bond in de film nagenoeg monogaam te laten, maar vindt dit niet passen bij “de levensstijl van een voortdurend de dood trotserend geheim agent”.

Kortom, de Nederlandse reacties op The Living Daylights waren ronduit lovend. Met name het sterke spel van Dalton en de grimmigere sfeer van de film vielen in goede aarde. Iets wat twee jaren later bij Licence to Kill juist als voornaamste punten van kritiek werden genoemd!
