The Bondstars day will kick-off with morning coffee in the John Barry Theatre and terrace – which faces the new ‘Sean Connery Stage’ – followed by the first ever UK cinema screening of the original 1954 version of Casino Royale, plus an exclusive and never-before-seen filmed interview with Jimmy Bond himself, actor Barry Nelson discussing the production.

We’ll continue day in the theatre. 

With readings of extracts from books by Bond actors throughout, as we introduce: Jon Turner to discuss his mentor Richard Chopping’s designs for Fleming’s James Bond books and archive (which he curates) as well as Ian Fleming biographer Andrew Lycett will discussing all things Ian Fleming.

David Lowbridge-Ellis will then host interviews and discussions with continuation authors Raymond Benson, Young Bond author Charlie Higson, Double-O series author Kim Sherwood, Steve Cole, also Young Bond, and (pending filming commitments) Anthony Horowitz.

Lunch and filming locations

Lunch will follow and then we’ll move into the Pinewood Picture Gallery for book signings, mingling, informal chat, some memorabilia tables and a talk about Pinewood filming locations by author Dave Worrall on the garden patio, before afternoon tea brings the Bondstars day to a close.

There’ll also be a 24 page exclusive commemorative souvenir brochure included.

De bekendmaking is geen toeval, het valt samen met dag dat Sean Connery 92 zou zijn geworden en in het jaar dat James Bond 60 jaar bestaat. Namens de familie Connery zeiden Stephane en Jason Connery:

Our family consider it a great honour to have a stage named after Sean. It is fitting considering the amount of time Sean spent at Pinewood and we know that he would have been very touched by this privilege.

We are delighted to announce that one of our five new sound stages at Pinewood Studios will be named, ‘The Sean Connery Stage’. It is fitting that the naming ceremony will take place in 2022, the 60th anniversary year of the James Bond films.

Connery en Pinewood

Connery’s rijke geschiedenis met Pinewood gaat verder dan James Bond. Voor zijn iconische rol als 007 nam hij er onder andere Hell Drivers (1957) op, waarin hij een klein rolletje had als vrachtwagenchauffeur. Daarna zou hij tot 1999 nog regelmatig terugkeren op zowel Pinewood als Shepperton Studios. Shepperton werd in 2001 overgenomen en is sindsdien een van de vele studio’s die Pinewood tegenwoordig in handen heeft.

De tuin van de studio kwam duidelijk in beeld in zijn tweede Bond-film From Russia With Love (1963), waarin het een decor is voor SPECTRE-eiland. Zowel voor Connery als de 007-producenten was Pinewood een soort tweede thuis.

De connectie tussen Pinewood en Bond

Sean Connery is niet de enige Bond-gerelateerde persoon die op de Pinewood Studios een eigen studio heeft. Zo is er onder andere de Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage (vroeger bekend als de 007 stage) en is er sinds 2014 het John Barry Theatre te vinden. Zevenvoudig James Bond, Sir Roger Moore, kreeg op 15 oktober 2015 zijn eigen The Roger Moore Stage.

De 007 stage is speciaal gebouwd voor The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), om de interieurscènes van de supertanker Liparus te filmen. De gigantische studio, bedacht door Ken Adam, wordt tot de dag van vandaag nog gebruikt. Dat gebeurt niet zonder slag of stoot. In 1984 is de volledige studio uitgebrand tijdens de opnames van Legend (1985) en ook tijdens de opnames van Casino Royale (2006) en No Time To Die (2021) moest het de studio ontgelden; met respectievelijk een nieuwe brand en een uit de hand gelopen explosie.
